How brilliantly orange accessories go with the brown jeans and a green top. Green and orange are a good combination. The leopard boots (Eijk Store) have orange in them too. As usual the bag’s orange shade is far too bright in these photos. I cannot get that right.

Marjolein and I photographed the outfit in Leiden, thinking it would be a sunny day. Oh, what a pity. Cold, windy and miserable are the best ways to describe the weather. Nevertheless, I have to be without a coat for the photos.

Below: We started at Restaurant Paco Ciao, on our way from the station to the centre. You see Marjolein sitting at the piano, but when I walked in 15 minutes before, this was the room I saw with no people and no restaurant. I was puzzled and went back outside, caught the attention of guests sitting in the bay window, gesticulate how to get in. A woman laughed and came to fetch me.

Below: Marjolein showing how the mirror door of the cupboard is actually the door to the restaurant. So funny and clever.

Below: The view from our table at Paco Ciao. The restaurant is in a very grand old house and decorated quite quirky.

Restaurant Paco Ciao

As we left the restaurant, one of the waitresses said “You should have a look upstairs and see the other rooms. And don’t forget to pay a visit to the WC, weird as it may sound”.
So we did.

Below: As we went up the grand stairs we passed this glass-stained window. Wow.

Below: This is part of the restaurant upstairs, located in a room with a beautiful old fireplace.
Sorry for the blurriness; I didn’t check the photo carefully enough after I took it. Lots of things go wrong because I need to put reading glasses on, and I am often too lazy to do that. And no, I am not going to wear glasses with a reading section. I hate glasses on me.

Below: Another room, probably used as a lounge room where they serve drinks. Did I say the decoration was quirky? I didn’t exaggerate, did I? Love the books, glued to the mantelpiece.

Below: We pressed the button (several times even) and this is what happened: DISCO.

What a great place. We loved it.

It was time to take outfit photos. We planned to do an almshouse courtyard tour. As it was really cold, we only tried about 4 of 5 and they were disappointing. There might be lovely ones (there are 21 of them which are open to the public) but after the disappointing start and given the icy cold, we didn’t want to continue.

Below: The first courtyard which was absolute crap. Marjolein suggested this pose.
I hate that my hair and hairpiece weren’t behaving as I would like to. You know me and my obsession with my hair. I had saved money to go back to the salon and either get this hairpiece in a better shape or buy a new one, but I blew the money on a new and lighter camera.

Below: Hey kitty, sweet kitty. Marjolein and I are both very much cat lovers.

Below: A sitting down photo. I haven’t learned any new poses. The brown trousers are new and so is the green blouse (a bargain). The accessories create more interest to the outfit in my opinion. I also had green and orange bracelets but that was too matchy matchy, even for me, so I went with brown ones.

Below: I wore my kimono style coat with an orange scarf (gift from Marjolein). I didn’t need to wear my long brown gloves which surprised me as it was so cold.

Below: As we walked through Leiden, there were plenty of beautiful houses and buildings to photograph. Here are two random ones.

What happened in my life this week

First a response to the question of some of my readers, how to pronounce my name. Here it is in this video below.

The central heating boiler had to be fixed twice by the plumber. After his first attempt, it went OK, in the sense that when it shut down, you only had to press a button and bingo, the heat came back on again. Hopefully, it is now permanently fixed.

Below: As promised last week, a photo of my family at my brother’s birthday.

Family

We had dinner with Froukje and Petro. And on Sunday our friends George and Marla fed us with pea soup. That day they looked after dog Watson while we were babysitting granddaughter Evy. Her parents took Evy’s big sister Zoë (3 years old) to a Saint Nicholas performance in a theatre.

Below: Normally Saint Nicholas is only a hype with children around the 5th of December. But Zoë loves Sint Nicholas and his Pieten (Peets) all year round. If you want more explanation about this huge event in the Netherlands, check this out.

Saint Nicholas and his peets

We saw a film called The Penguin Lessons. Yes, as the poster says, it was funny and endearing, but the dark reality that lay underneath, got under my skin. The film is set in Argentina in 1976. And the fact that innocent people could just be thrown into prison, get tortured and killed, gets to me. It gets to me because I know this is still going on in sooo many parts of the world. It makes me sad.

The Penguin Lessons

The film was playing at the Koepel (dome) which used to be a heavily guarded prison. It is now turned into a business centre, restaurant and film theatres. The film theatres are all the way down in the basement. Magnificent building.

Below: These cells are still in the building, reminders of the past. Only, behind the doors are now spaces used for several purposes, with a lot of light and no bars. I also took this photo for the photo course.

Below: Enjoying a pizza before the film started with a concentrating (grumpy) face. Evidence why I always smile in my blog photos.
I am wearing my pearls a lot as they have been newly strung and are still a bit tight.

Marjolein and I did another photo shoot in The Hague to boost my stock. Another cold day, which made me choose the Passage (old, covered shopping street) as background. We always find a place to show you which is just a little bit different even if we have been there before. The Passage was dry, no wind, not that cold and there was enough light. We used my new light-weight camera. Only, every camera needs light, enough light for sharp photos. Even though the roof of the Passage is glass, the photos aren’t that sharp.

Had a couple of FaceTime hours with Anja in Spain. Such a good way to keep in touch.

Hanka came over for an hour to have a coffee and to catch up. She is, of course, struggling with the loss of her husband but coping remarkably well. Her adult children are living with her which softens the pain just a little bit, I expect.

Had huge problems with my Photo Editor programme and the photos taken with the new camera. I won’t go into detail as it is tedious, but I had to ring a few people before everything was fixed again. I have an IT man for my blog and another one for my computer. Without them I would be lost.

After a day with Nicky and Randolf and the granddaughters we went out for a meal in a brown café (that’s how we call such an establishment), followed by a fab theatre performance. Dog Watson spent the night with the dog sitter, bless her heart.

Below: Brown café.

Below: Not the best angle to take a photo of me, but the dinner was excellent (not just chips).

Photo Assignment Black and white

Here are three photos I took with my new camera.

Excellent outfit colors, Greetje! I particularly like the broach. Absolutely wonderful photos, your photography is definitely improving.L

    1. The brooch is created by an artist. She had so many quirky and lovely things for sale that I bough two brooches. An orange one and a green one. Both totally different. Couldn’t choose.

  2. These colors aren’t usually my favorites, although I think they go perfectly with your look. I really like the pants, and I’d include the shirt in your tradition of dressing a bit like a musketeer sometimes. The restaurant is wonderful—such luxurious decor and originality! I love the photo with your scarf around your neck; it looks adorable on you. It’s so hard for me to pronounce your name correctly; my tongue gets all tied up. LOL

    1. Hahaha, you are right, I do have a tendency towards the musketeer look. Remember those old days? 2012 and 2013? You said that about me a couple of times. I remember you disliking a pair of black trousers (Sarah Pacini). They reminded you of tunos. No idea why I like it. Perhaps because those musketeers looked sexy?
The photo with the scarf is particularly good because it doesn’t looked posed, even though it was.
Most people outside of the Netherlands cannot pronounce my name.

  3. What a fun post! Your outfit is gorgeous and the colors are very flattering on you. The coat and scarf look is fab, too. I feel your pain with the hair. When mine looks good, the whole day goes better. For myself, I find parting my hair even a little to the side helps it look fuller and somehow more flattering. Thanks for another day-brightening post!

    1. I am going to try that hair parting Wendy; thanks for the tip.

  4. You do find the most interesting and quirky places to use in your posts! I do enjoy seeing Marjolein’s (and your other friends’) outfits as well as yours. I especially enjoyed seeing the glorious white door —- imagine the time it took to carve that.
The disco ball in the WC reminds me of being in quarantine during Covid. My husband and I used to listen to music in the kitchen while we prepared meals, and often we would dance along. I surprised him with a small disco ball, which made the dancing even more fun!

    1. A century ago (and before that) labour was cheap (and the working people poor), so you could get carving like this white door when you were rich.
What a sweet story about you and your husband during Covid. You certainly made the most of that period.

  5. Paco Ciao looks so amazing and fun. Great place for a photo shoot. And I would love to see it and the Koepel. What an interesting venue for a movie. Your scarves and jewelry are very interesting additions to your wardrobe.

    1. You’ll have to come over to the Netherlands then to see it for yourself.
I have quite a big collection of jewellery, mostly inexpensive and some of it dated. Accessories can make an outfit so much better.

  6. I really like your brown and green outfit with the orange accents. Thank you for the video pronouncing your name. The cafe looks like a lot of fun.

    1. You are very welcome Ginger. What surprised me most about the cafe was the high standard of their food and cappuccino. Usually these things aren’t the greatest in a cafe (bar), but it was all delicious. Standard food, nothing fancy but cooked superbly.

  7. I love your outfit…love the green blouse! The jewelry…the slacks and shoes! The restaurant is very cool. Thank you so much for pronouncing your name. My parents ( and about a 1000 relatives) were Danish so I was definitely growling out the g the wrong way! Danish is not Dutch or German…although maybe Norwegian ( a little joke)

    1. Thank you for the compliments. I thought Danish and Dutch were similar. My mistake.

  8. I love those colors on you, great outfit!

That quirky cafe is really fun! I would have spent a couple of hours disco dancing in the bathroom.

You always manage to find and share the most interesting places! Now I need to plan another visit…

    1. Thanks Susan. We did spend three songs in the bathroom haha.
Finding nice places is not easy and usually it is either Marjolein who finds good spots or it is sheer luck as with this quirky cafe.

  9. Those are two of my very favorite male actors, so I will definitely see the movie. And thank you for the tutorial on your name! It will be very useful if I ever get back to Amsterdam and can invite you for coffee and cake.

    1. Hahaha, don’t bother remembering it Roberta. If we will have coffee and cake, I will gladly teach you my name again.

  10. Thank you for making my weekend read so enjoyable. The video tutorial on pronouncing your name is great. Now will I remember it?

I love the outfit photos, city photos, people photos, and black and white photos. Your humor starts me smiling on Saturday.

    1. No Gayle, you will not remember how to pronounce my name as you won’t repeat it until it is settled in your brain. And why would you?
I am always surprised when I read about my humor. Sometimes I even read my post again to see what was funny. But I accept the compliment gladly. Bringing a smile on someone’s face is what I live for.

  11. I think your hair looks great! What is it you don’t like?
Love the disco bathroom, would have spent all day in there!

    1. I like my hair more up at the top and not too sleek around my face. Sometimes I think it makes me look a little frumpy and I know how it can be because it was ideal the first month after I bought it. I may have ruined it a little.
As for the disco bathroom, we did spend three songs in there haha.

  12. Greetings from (somewhat sunny) southern California. As always this post is a delightful way to begin my weekend. I loved the very interesting restaurant –such great fun! I am sorry you are unhappy with your hair because I think it looked lovely in all the pictures. Thank you for the tutorial on how to pronounce your name.

    1. I am afraid I am rather a perfectionist Patricia. I even had to go to a psychologist at some stage of my life to reign that in. And my hair has been a ‘problem’ since I hit 50.

  13. Amazing combined colours! and I especially like the beautiful scarf that was gifted to you….The waxed jeans another favourite, As you probably are aware Canada has a special bond with the Netherlands who annually send us 10,000 Tulip bulbs as a gift of thanks.. The bond goes back to the Second World War! Seeing your photos of the architecture of your many towns and cities is another delight …thank you…

    1. Thank you Elizabeth. The combination brown, green, orange is easily made as the colours are so near to one another. The jeans may look waxed but they are not. Just normal jeans. And yes, I know about the bond with Canada and the tulips. You took care of our royal family during the war. I think that provided the loviest childhood for the children.

  14. Such a lovely photo of you leaning up against the doorway in your coat and striking scarf. Another interesting and photogenic post!

    1. I agree with you, that photo is the one less posed (although I was posing). It looks carefree. Thank you for the compliments.

  15. Thank you-I love reading and viewing your photo shoots.
And love your fashion sense too!

    1. That is so good to read Karen. It is my hobby and I love every aspect of blogging. Knowing that people appreciate your work is very rewarding.

  16. May I ask the model of light camera that you use? My teen daughter wants a camera for Christmas and I am at a loss as to what model’s are good. I am in the US. It would need to be a model I can get here.

    1. I am afraid I cannot really help you. My light camera is a Sony DSC RX 100M 7A but it is expensive (€ 1.300 in the Netherlands). Plus if you don’t know what all the buttons and wheels are for, you will touch them by accident (you will!) and not know how to correct the way they have set your camera. You also have to know a little bit about photography although the setting Automatic helps of course.
I bought a camera years, ago, thinking you just had to click it. Not so. Found out the hard way.

  17. Vous êtes très élégante !J’adore le marron porté avec du vert !Votre perruque donne du volume à votre coiffure et vous rajeunit.
J’adore vos reportages, cela nous fait connaître les Pays Bas .
    Bonne semaine.

    1. Merci, ça me fait vraiment plaisir. Et oui, ma perruque donne plus de volume, mais j’ai souvent envie de changer un peu. Je suis perfectionniste, je le crains.
