The black pleated skirt with cream jumper is an outfit I had kept in my photo album ‘Outfits still to do’. It was time for a blog post with a skirt again, so I forwarded the outfit wearing different boots to my photographer Marjolein and asked her opinion.
“You should wear your white cowboy boots with this”, she replied. I dismissed that suggestion with a “No, I don’t think so” but tried it anyway. And she was right (in my opinion). I liked what I saw in the mirror.

The leopard belt is second-hand from Etsy and adds interest to the outfit (again, in my opinion). For my bag I wanted something else than cream or black. It became the pale slate bag by Demellier, which I think is funky. Inspired two years ago by Susan (Une femme & Susan Blakey).

As I told you in a previous post, it was cold and nasty weather, so I chose the Passage (an old, covered shopping street in The Hague) to do the photo shoot. Alas, despite the glass roof, there was not enough light to get sharp photos but I bet you don’t really care.

We started at department store The Bijenkorf (below) as we wanted coffee and some warmth first. It is a magnificent building. This link tells you more about the building in Dutch (sorry), but there is an amusing video of the build in 1926.

Below: I downloaded this photo from Wikipedia, taken by Choinowski as it is such a gorgeous photo of the building.

Below: Why did we have cappuccino here and not in the Passage? Because Marjolein knew that the Bijenkorf had bears at their coffee place. That was no lie.

Below: We wandered through the department store and I took this photo of Marjolein. Her two-coloured shirt and her necklace are a great match. In reality her purple jumper is a deeper shade but if I wanted to show you her new jeans, I had to make the photo a bit lighter.

Marjolein head to toe

Below: Even a close-up doesn’t show the shimmer in the jeans. And they look brown in this photo while they are black.

Below: As we went upstairs with the escalator, we saw this Piet (Peet), who is ‘Saint Nicholas helper’, flying, wearing a golden mask. Rather weird as Piets don’t have wings and they don’t wear a golden mask. For me, this is a step too far.

Below: If you go up or down these beautiful stairs, you’ll pass this grand stained-glass.

Below: Time to hit the Passage and take some outfit photos. A chocolate shop with the warrant of Purveyor to the Royal Household had golden decorations. The drapery was mimicking the way I had my jumper tucked into the skirt. Or vice versa.

Below: We tried this restaurant for lunch because of the quirky trees but they only had burgers. Not our cup of tea. A quick photo, an apology and off we went.

Below: We headed towards another restaurant, called Du Passage and sat upstairs where the view was great.

Passage The Hague

The restaurant was a bit of a gamble as we didn’t think it was all that good, last time we ate here. This time it was really good. Perhaps a different chef?

Below: Fun photo. Marjolein is good in thinking up these things.

Below: After lunch, I wanted to photograph the coats as well. Especially because I was wearing an ancient but rather fabulous leopard scarf.

Below: Vague close-up. This coat is two inches shorter than my skirt. My new coat would have been long enough but that one is less warm. And warmth is what we needed. (I mean the long black coat in this post, also photographed in the Passage.)

Then for the historic buildings. The Hague has many.

Below: The grand building of what used to be department store and very chic fashion house Maison de Bonneterie. The name is still on the building, but it’s now H&M. How times are a changing.

Below: Marjolein showed me that when you were standing at a certain point, you could see three towers.

What happened in my life this week

Below: I ordered this jumper from Boden after being inspired by Nikki (Midlifechic), who showed it on her blog in ice blue. I thought it was really nice but hesitated as it doesn’t comply with my three wardrobe criteria, edgy, arty or modern. Unless it is modern.
Then husband Ron said he hated the jumper and I sent it back.

Below: Had coffee with Marita who showed me her wedding photos (as by my request). They were really good. She chose a fab photographer.
The photo below doesn’t do her trousers justice. They were made from the softest fabric, nice and warm.

Marita

Below: I wore this outfit to meet Marita. Link to the original post of 2024 with different boots and different earrings and bag. As in the original post, I was wearing a woollen skirt and thick tights underneath the silver skirt. Really warm outfit.

Below: Marcella came round for a chat and a coffee. Love her coat with that belt (her own styling). Her hair is blonde again and quite long.

Below: Been to the hairdresser this Friday; this is how I want my hair to look like. This is without the extra hairpiece. Only, as my hair is thin, it doesn’t look in the light from behind or when the wind blows.

For next week’s blog post, Marjolein and I visited the Iris van Herpen exhibition in the Kunsthal Rotterdam. How one small woman can produce so many incredible, intricate and technically challenging designs blew our mind. Prepare for an overload of photos next week.
Below a sample of what you can expect. If you don’t like this art form, I am afraid, you will have to skip it and go straight to the ‘What happened in my life this week‘.

  1. The coat, the skirt, the boots and the scarf were wonderful!
The photos in the old shopping arcade were beautiful. Great advice revthe white boots!

    1. Thank you for all the compliments. Yes, I should listen if I ask advice. Often I am too pigheaded.

  2. All of you looked so interesting and lovely this week. /the passage photos were wonderful–such an interesting place as were the other buildings you selected. Thank you for such a delightful post (as always1).

    1. I am glad you still enjoy my posts. Sometimes I think doesn’t this get boring? But after I have asked you all a few months ago and got 100 comments, saying “Don’t change a thing!”, I put these thoughts in a locked box haha.

    Hi Greetje,
Thank you for your wonderful weekly post. I enjoy your fashion photos along with seeing the architecture of the Netherlands. I certainly learn something new each week. I love how you are showing a variety of photography skills. I came across your blog because I also follow Susan Blakey.
    Thank you,
    Ginny

    1. Ah Ginny, that is so lovely, gaining a new reader through a friend’s blog. I hope I can keep you entertained for many posts to come.

  4. It is a pity that Ron didn’t like the jumper and you sent it back. I thought it looked great on you! Also liked the black pleated skirt.

    1. Ron’s dislike of the jumper was the final straw, it wasn’t the main reason. If I am really convinced about a garment (or shoes) I will keep it and write his opinion off as taste difference.

  5. Hi Greetje,

Just love you and your friend’s beautiful coats with leopard scarves! Your skirt peeking from the bottom is perfect, the belted gray coat, the pretty purple coat….everyone is so stylish. Always enjoy the visits with interesting architecture, art and some fun along the way. I think the white boots were a good choice with the pleated skirt outfit….its a win. I like the wide leg jeans too!

    1. It is a good thing I listed to Marjolein when she advised the white boots. Of course not right away. I am pigheaded. But I do contemplate.

Oh, I am excited about the Iris van Herpen exhibit. I love her work.
How funny that you both wore leopard scarves, just goes to show that they are classics. Amazing photography again, Greetje!

    1. Indeed, as we have learned, leopard is both a classic and a neutral.
The Iris van Herpen exhibition was so impressive that I know I cannot ‘kill my darlings’. Poor readers who don’t like this kind of art. It is going to be a post for the few I am afraid.

  7. You’re so fortunate to have a talented friend photographer at all your fabulous locations. The dept store and bears!! Beautiful.
You styled the pleated skirt exactly as I would have, including the leopard belt. Great minds.

    1. Great minds. Or we have been influenced by other bloggers and Instagrammers haha. I have learned a lot since I blog.

  8. That’s a superb outfit, and yes, the white cowboy boots work very well! Love seeing all of the architecture and details of the buildings. So much craftsmanship that went into these.

I like the Fair Isle sweater on you, too bad it didn’t work.

    1. Yes, in the old days when so many people were poor, labour was cheap and the rich could afford craftsmen to adorn their buildings.
The Fair Isle sweater was nice but didn’t meet my three words edgy, arty or modern. And when your husband hates it, then that’s the end of it.

  9. Love your outfit and especially the white boots, you look very elegant!
Can I ask you a question? I’m not a fan of wide leg trousers at all – I can just about like them in the summer in a nice floaty fabric with a fitted top but I just don’t get the wide legged jeans that are everywhere just now. All that heavy fabric flapping around the legs just does not do it for me. Even really slim people look twice their size when wearing them and anyone like me who is slightly rounded have legs like tree trunks in wide jeans. There is no shape just straight up and down from the feet to the waist. Is it just me does everyone else love them?
I”m just waiting for the wide leg phase to pass and I’ll stick with bootleg shape until then.
P.S. You and you lovely friends all look great whatever you wear and much more fashionable than I could ever achieve. Have a nice weekend, Margaret, Scotland x

    1. And I was just thinking how good those wide leg jeans looked and how nicely balanced the outfit is, haha!

      1. Haha Terri, I think Margaret meant that the wide leg trouser trend doesn’t look good on her bodyshape. No comment of disapproval to me or my friends. But thank you for your compliment.

    2. Like with every trend, you have to know whether it will suit you or not. If not, don’t buy it. Which might make your clothes shopping life a little more difficult. But usually there are alternatives, like your bootleg trousers. Fashion is not as narrow anymore as it was in for instance the seventies. When mini skirts were in, nobody could buy and wear anything else than mini. And of course, not everybody suited this. The wide leg phase will pass as all other trends have passed. After all, the fashion industry has to come up with something totally different to let us buy new stuff. I have always had a passion for clothes and I think I am drawn to like-minded woman although not all my friends are as mad as I am.
      Love Scotland and the Scots.

  10. Hello, You

Lovely outfits on everyone, lovely pics and actually, a lovely Boden jumper. I think it looks good on you, but if Ron didn’t like it then, yep,, back it had to go! That said, I had a corduroy duster coat – remember them? – years ago, and I loved it. Someone Else didn’t! He couldn’t say why exactly, as it suited my style and looked good (says she modestly), but it still got the thumbs down. So what did I do? I wore it whenever I wanted to because I liked it! You and your jumper reminded me that it must be lurking in the black hole of a wardrobe somewhere so when I’ve finished this I’m going excavating!

And then I’m going to find out where Castle Gresley is in the UK where Jan lives. I’m intrigued…

    Have a good week.
    Gee

    1. I don’t return everything Ron doesn’t like. When I am really sure about an item, I write his disapproval off as taste difference. But I was hesitating myself. Not that I didn’t like it, I do, but because it didn’t have the vibe I am after. Good luck in excavating your duster coat.
I was wondering where Castle Gresley is in the UK as well. It is ‘near’ Birmingham.

  11. Love, love your posts Greetje, the fashion, the places, your friends and await Saturday eagerly every week. The show of the hem on the pleated black skirt under the shorter coat is a great look. Thanx for your continued blogging. Jan in Castle Gresley, UK

    1. Well, what do you know? That’s great, my little peeve (the skirt showing under the coat) is actually perceived as a great look. Makes me happy.
As I enjoy blogging as a hobby so much, I expect I will continue for quite a while. Glad you enjoy the blog posts.
